The Legend Yo-Yo Ma's Impromtu Performance Leaves Mumbai Spellbound
Have you ever heard about Yo-Yo Ma? No? We’ll tell you. Yo-Yo Ma is a world-renowned Chinese-American cellist who has recorded greater than 100 albums, received 19 Grammy awards and won the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Yo-Yo Ma was recently in Mumbai to perform in a sold-out concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. While this is something huge, to see a 19 Grammy winner legend perform but his solo impromptu performance at the Marine Drive took the Mumbaikars by surprise.
The performance lasted 20 minutes amidst the sound of traffic where he performed the vignettes from JS Bach’s Suite No 1. A bystander who was enjoying Yo-Yo’s performance shared his video saying, “I had the chance to catch the legend Yo-Yo Ma putting on an impromptu performance for passers-by on Marine Drive. Absolutely filled with joy! So so worth all the trouble!”
After the 63-year-old cellist finished playing, he shook hand with people in the crowd and walked back to his hotel across the street. “I am not quite sure what he played. But listening to him left me spellbound. I have given him my car, and he has promised to write to me soon,” a Mumbai resident Prakash Poddar said.
