Formula 1 Legend Niki Lauda Passes Away At 70
One of the greatest Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda has passed away at the age of 70. Niki’s family confirmed that the three-time world champion passed away overnight after battling multiple health issues for over a year. He had received a lung transplant eight months ago where he stayed in the hospital for over two months. Lauda was again admitted in the hospital earlier this year due to a flu infection. Many reports have suggested that Lauda was undergoing kidney dialysis at his home in Switzerland.
Niki’s family confirmed the news in a statement issued to the Austrian media. It said, “With deep sadness, we announce that our beloved Niki has peacefully passed away with his family on Monday. His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable, his tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain. A role model and a benchmark for all of us, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather away from the public, and he will be missed.”
A world of motorsport is in a state of grief and sadness as it loses one of the most respected figures. Niki won three titles in Formula 1 in 1975, 1977 and 1984 respectively. The legend had a shaky career start although performed exceptionally well until his first race win in 1974 with Ferrari. This team with Ferrari brought him two world titles and competed in 171 races, winning 25 of them. Came 1976 when Lauda met with a horrific crash at the Nurburgring, leaving him with severe burns. But the champion made a dramatic return to the F1 circuit and that’s when the world knew they were looking at an icon.
In 1979, Niki took retirement from the Formula 1 life to focus on other interests and business but made a comeback in 1982 with McLaren. And two year after his return to the circuit, he picked up his third world title in 1984 against his teammate Alain Prost by half a point difference. He retired for good after the 1985 season.
It wasn’t just his driving that gained him the respect but his greater role in taking forth the world of Formula 1. He has held a number of senior management roles with popular teams and his recent one being the non-executive member at Mercedes since 2012. Niki is responsible for bringing Lewis Hamilton in the team. He was a true motor-head and a legend whose legacy will be remembered for ages to come.
